How to grow perennial ryegrass

How to grow perennial ryegrass

Sowing can be done in spring and autumn, but autumn is better. The seeding rate per hectare is 11-15 kg, the row spacing is 15-20 cm, and the soil covering depth is 1 to 2 cm. The application of nitrogen fertilizer can promote growth, increase the output of organic matter and protein content, and reduce the content of hemicellulose that is difficult to digest. It can be cut 3 to 4 times in the following year of autumn sowing, and it produces 45-60 tons of fresh grass or 750-1125 kg of seeds per hectare. For green feed, it should be mowed before heading or later. For hay, it is suitable to be mowed at the beginning of flowering. The seeds used for harvesting should be mowed during the wax maturity period. The height of stubble should not be less than 5 cm to facilitate regeneration

Since perennial ryegrass sets seeds normally, they are usually propagated by sowing. Before planting, it is necessary to prepare the ground carefully, irrigate the land deeply one day in advance, and plant the seeds under semi-wet topsoil the next day. If conditions permit, appropriate amount of base fertilizer should be applied when plowing the land, which is beneficial to the growth of grass seedlings. Ryegrass seeds germinate quickly, and the seedlings will usually emerge within 5-7 days after sowing. Attention should be paid to water supply and weed removal during the seedling stage after emergence. Because of its strong tillering power, it must be trimmed regularly to control its growth height and promote its base to increase tillering density, so that it can quickly cover and take shape.

In order to make ryegrass form a lawn and keep it green frequently, it is very important to spray nitrogen fertilizer. The Yangtze River Basin is generally applied during the rainy season, and the dosage is 3kg/100m2. The sowing rate of ryegrass is 15-30g/m2, and it can be sowed in autumn or spring, but autumn sowing is the most suitable, because autumn sowing is less weed, and the seedling stage maintenance and management saves labor.

Perennial ryegrass can also be vegetatively propagated. It is usually used in the case of expanded breeding of good varieties or insufficient supply of seeds. Generally, digging up 1 meter 2 grass block can be expanded to 5-10 meters 2 for transplanting, and the survival rate is very high after planting.
